František Kupka (1871 Opočno – 1957 Puteaux, France)
A Composition with Circles (Sketch for the painting titled The Sweetness of Living), (1929)
pencil, watercolour, paper; 250×205 mm, acquired 1959, Olomouc Museum of Art, inv. no. K 6282
František Kupka is considered to be one of the key personalities of non-representational (abstract) expression. In his work he synthetized the impulses of orphism, constructivism, and the interest in the painting matter and expressing the space. His view was not cold and geometric. His work is permeated by a lyrical tone originating from his interest in spiritual values, spiritism and cosmology. He was a founding member of an international group of abstract artists called Abstraction – Creation (1931).
