Vincenzo Mario Coronelli (1650 Venice – 1718 Vienna)
Celestial globe, 1695
wood, leather, paper, metal; height 172.7 cm, diameter 107 cm, Olomouc Archbishopric – Archdiocesan Museum in Kroměříž, KE 2396
The celestial globe and a terrestrial globe by the same author are part of the decoration of the historic interior of the Old Library of the Chateau in Kroměříž. The globe is dominated by the representation of the Earth’s axis and by the wooden band at the equator showing years with a variety of astronomical information. 74 constellations with their allegorical images are depicted on the globe. The artistic appearance is adapted from Coronellis atlas titled Atlante Veneto. Part of the decoration contains the monogram F. N. (Ferdinand Naboth) and the date 1695. Naboth probably participated in the coloring of globes for bishop Karl von Liechtenstein - Kastelkorn. In 1981 the globe and several other globes were restored.
