Paul Gauguin represents one of the most influential Post-Impressionists. He began as an Impressionist with Camille Pissarro, later following Paul Cézanne and initiating the Pontave school. Later he travelled to Martinique, Tahiti and finally the Marquesas, from where he brought new painting subjects, an appreciation of foreign cultures and, above all, inspiration for a free approach to life. He discovered colour and its symbolic values for modern art.
