Jewels of Baroque Sculpture in the Czech Lands | Martin Pavlíčeks lecture series
After visiting the Adršpach Rocks in 1723, Count František Antonín Count Špork (1662–1738) decided to carve a set of statues of saints and hermits in the rocks near Kuks. The work of Matthias Bernard Braun (1684–1738) reflects his late style as well as his artistic, religious and political preferences. At the same time, the Earl enlisted the tradition of colossal statues and bizarre nature parks, known from antiquity, renaissance and baroque.
